LITERARY CRITICISM

PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH

A philosophical approach usually describes or evaluates a work in terms of the ideas and values it contains. This philosophical approach does not view literature as an art; it recognizes that literature can influence the lives of others in a significant way. It is useful for works that present an obvious moral philosophy, such as music. It recognizes that literature has an effect on readers and the message of a work is very important.

“Planting a Pear Tree” By: Pu Songling

Planting a pear tree is a story written by Pu Songling. This story centered about the selfishness and the greediness of the countryman. It also gives an insight into the supposed magical powers of Daoist priests. The story depicts a variety of morals, values, and philosophies. Not only that, but it demonstrates how important it is to be kind to others.

Moral lessons are present in the story, which makes the readers gain realizations. Its moral lesson emphasized the importance of helping someone who is in need.  Whether it’s a big or small action, it still makes a big difference. The story also contains philosophies, one example is shown in this dialogue made by the priest; “Those of us who are Daoist priests have left our homes and given up all wealth. So when we see selfish behavior, it is hard for us to understand it. Now as it happens, I have some pears with a very fine flavor, and unselfishly I would like to share them with you.” The author believes that kindness should prosper rather than selfishness. It reflects the beliefs about what is right and what is wrong, what is just and what is unjust. The author wants us to know how to behave in front of others with kindness and respect. The beadle of the town went to help so he bought the poor priest a pear. From his actions, we can immediately say that he’s doing the right thing. This has led to the conclusion that this is what the author wants his readers to think is right. As we can see from the story, the countryman is so self-centered that he didn’t even give a single pear that he could not sell and even cursed the priest for not moving out of his place. From this scenario, we can say that this character showed no empathy to the poor priest. People from their surrounding immediately saw that his behavior was wrong and they even convinced the countryman to give the priest a pear. They also made noises that let the beadle of the town find out what’s happening.

As I have read the story, at first I thought it was a dull short story, but when I was done reading it I learned something about how selfishness can cause you no good and the life outcomes of bad karma and good karma. “Karma- What you put out will come back to you in unexpected ways”. Helping others or doing good deeds to others will create positive karma which will lead to good fortune and blessed life. While being selfish to others will create negative karma which will lead to suffering and misfortune.
